I went on a walk in the bluebell woods near my hometown in Dorset for three reasons
- Walk the dog
- Get my steps up (trying to achieve 10k steps per day, and not so easy when you have a sit down office job)
- AND of course the main reason was to take photos with both my mirrorless Fuji XT3 and iPhone 13 pro
My results were
- Yes she loved her walk
- I got my steps up (and the other ‘alf came with his iPhone 14 Pro Max – that was another interesting comparison too)
- I took the photos and was surprised with the results
If they had come both SOOC (straight out of camera), the results would’ve been significantly different, but I am of the opinion if there is software to use to enhance a picture, I am always happy to use it. Saying that, I do not spend much time on editing pictures, let’s face it, I just don’t have the patience. But I tweak a few things here and there but trying to keep it as natural as I saw the picture out of camera.
Here are a couple of examples, and yes the XT3 camera instantly takes better pictures, a better bokeh and if done for professional photography, it would definitely be the better shot.
No 1. photo with the iPhone 12, No. 2 with the Fuji XT3 with 70-300mm lens
No. 3 iPhone 12, No. 4 Fuji XT3 with 70-300 lens.
This is where I struggling what I really want the camera for, I have been an amateur photographer for many years and have thoroughly enjoyed this hobby – you will see some of my pictures on Instagram @donnawhite_photography. If looking at my Insta page, please do comment on a post and say where you saw the link, it would be great to know someone is reading this blog 😉
However, the question comes back to the travelling light and do I want to carry a camera with me? I know I will definitely miss some of the sweet shots that I enjoy, i.e. using a telephoto lens is my favourite of getting a lot closer to wildlife with a decent aperture to be able to blur out much of the background. The counter argument is that these photos are only taken and hidden on a hard drive (and enjoyed briefly), or put up on Instagram – is that enough to warrant the extra weight in my luggage.
You can see what conclusion I am coming to…
The only question then is if I love travel photography, will I keep the interest up with ‘just’ a phone. Time will tell! The way I look at it, is travel light with a phone to try it out, I can always buy another camera at a later stage if I am missing out too much – and revisit the places (oh, what a hardship).
XT3 up for sale. Or is it…
