Flip flops (UK) are Jandals (NZ). No one will win on which is truly correct, this is a debate us Brits and Kiwis have to accept – it’s the same as Wellies and Gumboots! And although flip flops/jandals conjures up warm weather, the name of this site is also to reflect Rick’s and my similarities but with differences – and a versatility and love for travel whatever the weather.
Quoting Wikipedia – Flip-flops are also called thongs (sometimes pluggers[3]) in Australia,[4] jandals (originally a trademarked name derived from “Japanese sandals”) in New Zealand,[5] and slops or plakkies in South Africa and Zimbabwe.[6]
In the Philippines, tsinelas.[7] In India, chappal, (which traditionally referred to a leather slipper).[8] In Latin America, La Chancla.[9] Throughout the world, they are also known by a variety of other names, including slippers in Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.[citation needed]
But this is not about the right name, this is about the versatility of this amazing footwear that has been worn through the ages and they are still here now (so must be one of the greats)!
Here are a few examples –
- Casual Wear: Flip flops are often associated with casual wear, such as shorts, t-shirts, and beachwear. They can be a comfortable and convenient choice for warm weather or outdoor activities.
- Dressier Occasions: While flip flops are typically seen as casual wear, there are dressier versions of flip flops that can be worn with more formal clothing, such as dresses or dress pants. However, it is important to note that not all dress codes allow flip flops, so it’s always a good idea to check ahead of time.
- Travel: Flip flops can be a great choice for travel because they are lightweight, easy to pack, and can be worn in a variety of situations. They can be used as a casual shoe for walking around town, as a beach shoe, or as a shower shoe in a hostel or hotel.
- Athletic Activities: Many athletes and fitness enthusiasts wear flip flops as a post-workout or recovery shoe, as they are easy to slip on and off and allow the feet to breathe.
- Indoor Wear: In some cultures, it is customary to remove shoes before entering a home or temple. In these situations, flip flops can be a convenient and comfortable choice for indoor wear.
Overall, while flip flops may not be appropriate for all situations, they can be a versatile and convenient choice for many casual and informal occasions. So I am adding this one as well…
Hiking: Yes, not necessarily a recommended one, however our daughter walked the South Coast path in UK and took her new (not fully worn in!) hiking boots – they gave blisters on the first day therefore she rang for emergency help – yep you guessed it, I met up and gave her my trusty Kiwi jandals which were worn for much of the journey. The hike started from Swanage, Dorset and ended up at Lands End, Cornwall which took just over 3 weeks to complete.
